Tinkune monarchy Protest Update

On March 28, 2025, Tinkune, a locality in Kathmandu, Nepal, became the epicenter of violent clashes between pro-monarchy demonstrators and security forces. The unrest began when supporters of the monarchy organized a rally demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy and the re-establishment of Nepal as a Hindu state. The situation escalated as protesters attempted to breach police barricades, leading to confrontations with law enforcement.

Clashes and Police Response

The pro-monarchy protesters, in their attempt to advance beyond the designated protest area, confronted security personnel at Bagmati Bridge, a point marking the beginning of a restricted zone. Demonstrators tried to break through the barricades, prompting the police to respond with tear gas to disperse the crowd. As tensions heightened, the police resorted to firing warning shots into the air to control the situation.

Injuries and Escalation

During the clashes, several individuals sustained injuries, including a female armed police officer who suffered a head injury. The injured were transported to Kantipur Hospital in Tinkune for medical treatment. The escalation continued as protesters vandalized a building, smashing windows and setting it ablaze, further intensifying the unrest.

Attacks on Emergency Services and Media

The unrest extended to attacks on emergency services and media outlets. Firefighters responding to the blaze were met with stone pelting from the protesters, hindering their efforts to control the fire. Additionally, the office of Annapurna Post Daily, located in Tinkune, was targeted by demonstrators who threw stones, resulting in broken windows and property damage.

Security Measures and Public Safety

In response to the escalating violence, authorities deployed over 3,500 police personnel to maintain order and ensure public safety. The heavy security presence aimed to prevent further clashes and protect both public and private property from additional damage.

Appeal for Restraint

Amidst the turmoil, Durga Prasai, a prominent pro-monarchy figure, appealed to the protesters to refrain from attacking private property and to conduct their demonstrations peacefully. He emphasized that violence against private establishments undermines the movement’s objectives and called for disciplined and non-violent protests.

The events in Tinkune highlight the deepening divisions within Nepal’s political landscape, as factions advocating for the restoration of the monarchy clash with republican forces, leading to significant unrest and challenges for law enforcement in maintaining public order.
