Media commotion in English football after it was learned that Gary Lineker, FC Barcelona forward from 1986 to 1989, will stop presenting the famous program ‘Match of the Day’ after 26 years.
The British press reports that Lineker, who has a salary of 1.5 million euros, will leave the emblematic BBC program at the end of the season (after the 2026 World Cup) due to bad relations with his boss.
The newspaper ‘The Sun’ reports that Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC sports director, “is not exactly close” to Lineker and intends to give a radical facelift to ‘Match of the Day’.
Gary Lineker, the BBC’s highest-paid presenter, has reportedly decided to leave the program after six weeks of negotiations.
“Broadcaster Gary Lineker will step down as host of Match of the Day at the end of this season,” the BBC confirmed.
“There appears to be a personal vendetta on the part of the BBC against Lineker”
Broadcaster Eamonn Holmes complained that “there appears to be a personal vendetta on the part of the BBC” against Lineker.
Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan are the main candidates to replace Lineker (63 years old), who was on ‘Match of the Day’ since 1999.
