Matthäus apologizes for calling “rubble battery” to Leipzig and affirms that they have “much to build”

Lothar Matthäus, former soccer player and current television commentator, apologized to the RB Leipzig for having disqualified the team after his defeat against Mainz 05 on the weekend.

Leipzig does not find the course in the second half of the season. They march sixth in the Bundesliga and were eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League.

After a new defeat at the Mainz, the former world champion described the current state of the team as a Trümmerhaufen (a lot of rubble) in a Sky panel.

Matthäus pointed against Oliver Mintzlaff, executive director of RB: “He will not like hearing this, but the club now seems like a pile of rubble.” In addition, he criticized the team’s performance: “The club’s football is in a place where those responsible for the RB never wanted to see it.”

He also referred to the presence of Jürgen Klopp as the global director of the brand: “It is now in the club, but the situation will not change overnight, it will be a long -term process.”

The former Bayern, now commentator, acknowledged that his expression was not the most appropriate to refer to a club. He explained that his intention was to point out that in Leipzig there is “much to build.”

RB Leipzig, who has only won two league games in 2025, disappointed in the Champions League, adding only three points in eight games. Until now, its only high point of the season has been in the German Cup, where it managed to advance the semifinals.
