In a significant shift in the leadership of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the government has removed Kulman Ghising from his position as Managing Director and appointed Hitendra Dev Shakya in his place. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Monday evening, a minister confirmed.
Ghising, who gained national recognition for his efforts in eliminating load shedding and improving NEA’s financial stability, has now been replaced as part of the government’s administrative restructuring. His tenure at NEA was marked by major reforms in electricity distribution, infrastructure expansion, and cross-border power trade, making him a well-known figure in Nepal’s energy sector.
Energy Minister Deepak Khadka had been actively working toward bringing a leadership change at NEA, citing the need for fresh management to guide the authority’s future projects. Following this decision, Shakya, who has held previous positions within the authority, will now take on the responsibility of overseeing Nepal’s power sector operations.
This leadership transition comes at a crucial time when Nepal is focusing on energy self-sufficiency, power trade agreements with neighboring countries, and hydropower expansion. With the change in NEA’s leadership, stakeholders are keenly observing how the new administration will continue the progress made in recent years.
Shakya’s tenure will be closely watched, as the public and industry experts assess how NEA navigates upcoming challenges, including electricity demand management, rural electrification, and hydropower development.
