Guardiola qualifies his words about his scratches: “I did not in any way intend to downplay their importance”

Pep Guardiola has apologized for the words he spoke at a press conference after a question where they mentioned the scratches on his head and he humorously said that they were self-harm. Some words that he admitted “took him by surprise” and that at no time did he want to trivialize a mental health problem that affects many people, as he has admitted on his own social networks.

My answer was in no way intended to downplay the very serious problem of self-harm.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City coach

“Last night, at the end of a press conference, I was taken by surprise with a question about a scratch that had appeared on my face and I explained that a sharp nail had accidentally caused it. My answer was in no way intended to downplay the very serious problem of self-harm. I know that many people struggle with mental health problems every day, and I would like to take this moment to highlight one of the ways people can seek help, by calling the Samaritans hotline on 116. 123 or by sending an email to jo@samaritans.org”, includes the statement from the Manchester City coach.

The words for which he has apologized

After the 3-3 against Feyenoord, despite winning 3-0 in the 74th minute, he went out to talk to the press with a head full of scratches. An image that was not going to take long to go viral and that would later come out to give explanations in the face of general confusion: “With my fingers, with my nails… I want to hurt myself,” he said ironically to downplay the importance of the image he had given. And all after a game that leaves them in 15th place with only 8 points and in Play Off positions.
