The 2024 Ladies European Tour (LET) season concludes this week with the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open of Spain presented by Oysho, which is held at the Real Club Guadalhorce Golf. This event is reached without suspense in the fight to finish first in the Order of Merit, since no one can catch up with the Swiss Chiara Tamburlini, who has achieved three victories this year. The tournament, in any case, is reserved only for the 64 best in the circuit’s annual ranking, plus 11 guests (three of them Spanish amateurs).
Spain will have 17 players on the field, including Carlota Ciganda, who comes straight from playing the Tour Championship and aspires to a second national open title after the one won in 2021. The current tournament champion is the Indian Aditi Ashok, who will defend the title in her only appearance in the LET this year after making the jump to the LPGA. Along with them, other former champions such as Caroline Hedwall (2022), Anne Van Dam (2018, 2019) and Lee-Anne Pace (2013). In the case of Ciganda, he comes to this end of the season with a third in the Ford Championship at the end of March as his best position of the season. The Navarrese has not been able to finish with a victory in 2024, but she has accumulated five top 10 finishes. She has not won a tournament since the 2022 Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open.
The event also has 10 winners this year in the LET, such as the German Helen Briem; the English Alice Hewson, Liz Young, Annabel Dimmock, Bronte Law and Amy Taylor; the Belgian Mannon de Roey; the Danish Nicole Broch; Singaporean Shannon Tan; and the Spanish Marta Martín, who was crowned this year at the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open.
Although the Order of Merit (Race to Costa del Sol) already knows its winner, there is an important fight behind, since the players who finish in the ‘top 10’ will obtain their direct pass to the final phase of the LPGA Q-Series, That is, a great opportunity to enter the main world circuit. In this context, the Spanish María Hernández, currently ninth in the ranking, will seek to secure her position. For her part, Marta Martín could join this select group if she manages to finish among the top three in this tournament.
Spanish amateurs Paula Martín Sampedro (10th amateur ranking), Andrea Revuelta (12th), and Carla Bernat (28th) will compete for the Celia Barquín Award, for the best amateur of the tournament. Julia López, the first amateur world number one that Spanish golf has had for women, is not there, as she has just made the leap to professional at the age of 21. The one who will be there is Ana Peláez, who has just been proclaimed Spanish professional champion.
