Rodrigo Bentancur, a Tottenham player, is going to receive a seven-match ban in England for a joking comment towards his teammate Heung Min Son. It all started in a Uruguayan program, in which the presenter asks the Uruguayan for the Korean’s shirt.
“Could you bring me the Korean’s shirt?” the journalist asked. “Sonny?” Sonny’s cousins, because they’re all pretty much the same.
The Uruguayan player referred to his Korean teammate Heung Min Son with a comment that the FA considered racist and fined him
The controversy did not take long to come to light and the FA decided that, “The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has breached FA rule E3.1 by acting inappropriately and/or using abusive and/or insulting words and/or bring the game into disrepute. It is further alleged that this constitutes an ‘aggravated offence’ as defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin”.
This was penalized by 7 accumulated off-field matches in any competition where the FA is involved. That is, Bentancur can be lined up in the Europa League matches against Roma and Rangers.
“The Uruguayan international publicly apologized to his dressing room partner and even, says Son, had a very sincere conversation as soon as the event happened.”
“He apologized immediately afterwards when we were on vacation. I was at home and I didn’t even realize what was happening. He sent me a very long message and you could tell it came from the heart,” commented the South Korean and then emphasized that all humans they make mistakes and that he loves his partner.
This season, the midfielder had started in 7 of the ‘Spurs’ 11 games and had contributed with a goal.
