Borussia Dortmund made official this Wednesday morning the dismissal of its coach, Nuri Sahin, after last night’s defeat (2-1) against Bologna in the penultimate round of the Champions League group stage.
“We greatly appreciate Nuri Sahin and his work, we wanted a long collaboration and we hoped until the end that together we would achieve a turning point. After four defeats in a row, only one victory in the last nine games and the fact that we are currently tenth in the Bundesliga, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current situation. This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the match in Bologna,” said Lars Ricken, the club’s sporting director, in the statement.

“Unfortunately, at the moment we have not managed to do justice to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season. I wish all the best to this very special club,” says Nuri Sahin.

The former Dortmund and Real Madrid midfielder arrived as assistant coach in January of last year to be alongside Edin Terzic, a coach who ended up taking the team to the final of the Champions League in London in which they ended up losing to the king of the competition.
Then, after Terzic’s dismissal last summer, the German club announced him as first coach, signing a contract until 2027. However, poor results in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League have ‘taken him ahead’ and, in the next hours, the Dortmund team is expected to announce the name of its new coach.
